Our Story

Lana was a beautiful street dog from Bulgaria who captured the heart of our founder, Laila. After being thrown over a bridge into a river, Lana was rescued by Laila, and together they relocated to Denmark in February 2013, beginning a special bond that would eventually inspire a movement.

Tragically, on December 30, 2014, Lana escaped from their fenced garden and ran into the nearby woods. Laila desperately searched for her, hearing Lana's barking in the distance, but then came the devastating sound of two gunshots followed by silence. This marked the beginning of an almost six-month search, though Laila would later learn that Lana had been shot that day in the forest.

In Lana's memory and spirit, Laila founded Team Lana with a mission to help other street dogs find new and better lives—ensuring that Lana's story would continue to make a difference for animals in need.

Team Lana started small—just a few individual dogs found by locals and brought to Denmark by Laila and her friend Pia. But from these humble beginnings, the organization has grown significantly.

Today, Team Lana operates three shelters in Bulgaria, where Laila now lives and works tirelessly to rescue animals from the harsh realities of street life. The team has expanded to include dedicated individuals like Neli, Graham, John, Heather, and many others who play vital roles in the daily operations across our shelters.

In Denmark, Pia manages the finances and adoption contracts, supported by numerous volunteers who assist with adoptions, home visits, transport, events, and fostering. This international network of compassionate individuals has transformed Team Lana into a powerful force for animal welfare.

The dedicated individuals who make up Team Lana are the lifeblood of our organization. From shelter managers to animal caretakers, administrative staff to field rescuers, each person plays a vital role in our mission to help animals in need.

In Bulgaria, our team works tirelessly at our three shelters, providing daily care, medical attention, and love to hundreds of animals. Their compassion and expertise ensure that each rescued animal receives the best possible care on their journey to a forever home.

In Denmark and beyond, our extended team handles adoptions, home visits, transport, events, and community outreach. Together, this incredible network of caring individuals embodies our belief that by working as one, we can create meaningful change for animals who would otherwise have no chance.
